Hypocrisy over Turkey

Ireland wasn’t required to loosen its marriage or abortion laws before entry. Few, if any, ruminated darkly about the imminent "Catholization" of the EU when Spain and Portugal joined. And Poland’s large and backward agricultural sector did not prevent its joining.

It is obvious to everyone but the most blinkered that some people are bent on holding Turkey to higher (and from their point of view, hopefully unattainable) standards than other, predominantly Christian countries. Those who claim to be defending the core values of the European enterprise of ever closer union, peace and respect for human rights should take a long look in the mirror.
