Hurricane Jeanne Death Toll Surpasses 700 in Haiti

Jeanne left tens of thousands homeless in the northwest, and nearly 1,000 people are still unaccounted for. There are fears that the death toll could continue to rise.

Haitian President Boniface Alexandre participated in the opening of the 59th United Nations (UN) General Assembly yesterday. He pleaded for the international community to aid the victims of the devastating hurricane and help prevent the country from being plunged into further misery.

Haitian Interior Minister Gerard Latortue made clear difficult situation the country is faced with by emphasizing that more than 80,000 people have nothing to eat in northwestern Haiti.
