‘Historic Embrace’ in Cyprus Indicates Longing for Peace
Thousands of Greek Cypriots yesterday paid an Easter visit to the Apostolos Andreas Monastery in Dipkarpaz. Since an Easter service that was to be held at the monastery was canceled, the Greek Cypriots, who had been arriving since 10:30 a.m., only stayed a short time and left. Lighting candles and kissing icons, the visitors congregated at the sacred fountain outside of the monastery.
Panayoti Mihaili, daughter of the Greek Cypriot who constructed the buildings surrounding the monastery, visited the compound with her mother and children for the first time in 30 years. Saying that her mother had lived in a Turkish home in Limassol (Lemesos), Mihaili said the owners of the house had treated them with respect when they came to see it.
