Gul calls Greek FM to decrease tension in Aegean sea

According to Anatolia news agency, Gul told the Greek foreign minister that the problem between the two states should be solved by means of dialog, and conveyed Turkey’s point of view.

Gul also called on Greek side to be calm and proposed working together for the solution of the problem by means of starting a "joint study".

Greece accuses Turkey of frequently violating its airspace and even flying its jets over Greek islands. Turkey counters that Greek jets have recently stepped up aggressive patrols.

Meanwhile, Greece could block Turkey’s bid to join the European Union if an airspace dispute between the two countries continues to escalate, Greece’s defense minister was quoted as saying Saturday by the Greek media.

"We are telling the Turks to reconcile their differences with Greece and stop their hostile behavior," Yannos Papantoniou said. "If this does not happen, then it is clear that we will block the start of negotiations between Turkey and the EU."

Turkey is hoping to start entry talks with the EU at the end of next year.

Meanwhile, Gul sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, stating that Turkey may play an active role for peace in the Middle East, and may host a peace conference.

Normalization of Iraq and the implementation of the "road map" proposed by the U.S. for a solution in the Middle East have been the main headaches of the U.S. administration recently.
