Greek leftist opposition parties urge government to end military cooperation with Israel, recognize Palestine as state
ATHENS
Greece’s leftist opposition parties urged the government on Sunday to suspend military cooperation with Israel and recognize Palestine as a state.
SYRIZA, the Greek Communist Party (KKE), the New Left, and the Course of Freedom issued a joint open letter to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, highlighting the intensifying Israeli attacks on Gaza and the deteriorating humanitarian situation as a result of the assaults and blockade of humanitarian aid.
The letter reads: “Every day and on a large scale, individual acts of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes are being committed in violation of every concept and provision of international law, international humanitarian law, and international criminal law and in complete contradiction to the feelings of the peoples of the whole world, including the Greek people, who have consistently expressed their solidarity with the Palestinian people.
“In view of all these critical developments, the Greek government has no political, legal, or moral right to justify and ultimately support these crimes,” they added.
Against this backdrop, the parties urged the government to work toward ensuring an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the unhindered delivery of desperately needed humanitarian aid and professionals to the besieged Palestinian enclave.
“The Greek government should explicitly and unequivocally condemn the crimes of the state of Israel against the Palestinian people, against workers and volunteers, doctors and nurses, against humanitarian organizations and missions trying to bring aid, and against UN humanitarian aid personnel,” they stated.
Moreover, the parties called on the government to immediately suspend military cooperation with Israel and recognize Palestine as a state with pre-1967 borders and Eastern Jerusalem as its capital.
