Greek Cypriots Hold Vast to Veto Threat
The Greek press reports that Greek Cypriots announced this threat at a meeting of ambassadors from 25 EU countries held in Brussels. Despite the pressures on Europe, Ankara said it would not recognize Greek Cyprus without a solution on the island. The Greek press also claimed that United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Kofi Annan planned another attempt at a solution of the Cyprus issue for 2005 and demanded that the UN Cypriot office be reactivated. The Greek newspaper reports say Annan demanded a half million dollar-allocation to the Fifth Committee of UN General Assembly to cover the costs of reinstating the Cypriot Special Representative’s office to resume dialogue on the issue. The EU’s decision about Turkey on December 17th is expected to jumpstart Annan’s new initiative.
