Greek Cypriot side threatens veto of Turkey’s EU bid

Yorgo Yakovu, Foreign Minister of the Greek Cypriot administration, said that if Ankara signed the extended customs union protocol, which is designed to cover the ten new members of the EU but did not implement it, his administration would use its veto card.
“If Turkey continues make a show of saying that it would sign the customs protocol but would not implement it, Ankara will face the southern Cyprus’ veto card,” Yakovu said.
He added that Ankara’s stance was both pompous and ridiculous.
There were three stages until the October 3 date set by the EU to start accession talks with Turkey that require the unanimous vote of all member states, Yakovu said. The most significant one of these was the Partnership Council scheduled to meet on April 26, he said.
