Greek Cypriot lobby in US opposes Annan’s Cyprus plan
WASHINGTON (AA) – US Secretary of State Colin Powell said today that he was hopeful that both Turkish and Greek Cypriots would use yes vote during the referendum on UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s Cyprus plan.
Delivering a speech at the House of Representatives, Powell stated, "I have no information about last surveys. But my instinct tell me that Cypriot believe in that their leaders found an acceptable deal and they will use yes vote in referendum. Last year, I was impressed with the event which occured in border. Suddenly, people started to cross borders and visited their friends calling for leaders that they wanted peace. If a fair solution will be taken to referendum, both side will have to give-and-take. I believe that both sectors will gain a powerfull support by the world."
Meanwhile, a Greek lobby which is effective in US Congress started an initiative in sub-committee of the House of Representatives to block an agreement under the UN’s plan roof.
