Greek Cypriot leader: We won’t block Turkey’s EU bid

Describing Turkey’s EU bid as positive move, Papadopoulos however said that he hoped Ankara would end what he said were separatist policies regarding the two states on the island.
“Our basic policy is not to exercise the veto, our wish is that Turkey will help us with its own stance,” he said while in Athens to attend the Olympics. “We don’t want to pose an obstacle to its EU accession.”
The Greek Cypriot leader also said that he felt that acceptance of Turkey into the EU should be tied to a resolution of the dispute on Cyprus, something that the EU has in the past said it would not do as it is not a part of the basic membership criteria.
“I don’t think anyone would expect us to watch idly while this policy is promoted without having the right to request a link with Turkey’s EU accession and a Cyprus solution,” Papadopoulos said.
