Greek Archbishop: No Place for Turkey in EU

Greek financial daily Imerisia reported the comment made in a speech given by the archbishop that was aired on the church’s radio station. Christodoulos, who holds the highest position in the Greek Orthodox hierarchy in the country, said that they were grateful to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas for rejecting a reconciliation plan presented by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Reporting that the archbishop had pointed out that Christianity forms the shape of European culture, Imerisia wrote: "The archbishop said: ‘We don’t look down on the Turks. We recognize all people [of cultures] and we appreciate them all. However, Turkish culture is not in harmony with European culture’."
