Greek and Turkish sides waiting for Annan’s new proposal

President Rauf Denktas said, "Greek Cypriot side has some objections to the statement that (U.N.) Secretary General will make… They have asked us to make a written statement in which we say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to proposals on Friday." He told journalists,"we’ve bent as much as we could. If we bend further, we can be broken."
Following the meeting, Panos Beglitis, the spokesman of Greece’s Foreign Ministry, said, "at 13,30 (GMT) Mr. Annan will set forth his new proposal. Both sides will approach in positive manner. It was rough night but we exerted efforts to reach a solution. I think, the problem will be solved tomorrrow. "
Speaking in a news conference after the ten-hour Cyprus talks held in UN headquarters, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ugur Ziyal clarified the views of the Turkish side. "The demand of the Greek Cypriot side and Greece for inclusion of EU in Cyprus solution process could bring in other demands, therefore Turkey and TRNC didn’t accept it… We don’t know what proposal UN Secretary General will bring today. But we have told UN Secretary General in advance that the demand about EU was out of the frame."
Stressing that they felt the need to hold a news conference upon the Statements of Greek Foreign Ministry Spokesman Panos Beglitis, Ziyal said that seven hours of the ten-hour talks passed by U.N.’s efforts to persuade Greece.
Ziyal noted that after receiving the statement of Annan, they would contact with Ankara according to the content of the text.
