Gandhi Dynasty Returns to Power

The victory of the Congress Party paved the way once again for the Gandhi Family, the most influential political power of India since its independence in 1947, to regain leadership of the country. Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Congress Party and a daughter-in-law of Italian origin, is now preparing to rule India as the new Prime Minister.

Once Sonia Gandhi becomes the Prime Minister it will mark the first time an Indian citizen of foreign origin would have assumed political office. Sonia Gandhi married with Rajiv Gandhi in 1968 and became an Indian citizen in 1983. She still owns real estate in Italy, which has caused several fiery debates about whether it would be possible for a foreigner to be prime minister.

India State television announced that Sonia Gandhi and her son, 34-year old Rahul Gandhi, were elected as the representatives from the city of Amenti in Utter Pradesh state.

The Congress Party had announced previously that if Rahul Gandhi became involved in politics that would boost the power of the Party, which has been loosing blood for a long time.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in 1991.
