G-8 Invites Yaver to June Summit
According to the statement issued by the White House, an inviatation was extended to Yaver because his input on discussions concerning the Greater Middle East Project would be invaluable.
Yaver is expected to take up the issue of how he will contribute to Iraq’s political, social and economic development during the gathering of G-8, Middle Eastern and African leaders. The White House’s statement indicated that U.S. President George W. Bush would reiterate his support of Yaver.
Yaver gave in interview to Germany’s Focus magazine in which he insisted that Iraqi elections should take place as soon as possible. Yaver explained that early elections were imperative so that Iraq would not become a "puppet for great powers." He said, "I expect the U.N. to support the free, fair and transparent elections that will be held on January 31, 2005."
"Earlier is better," Yaver continued. "Iraq has been the toy of various dictators for years. We should not let it become the puppet of great powers.. That’s why the power should be given back to Iraqi people."
The G-8, comprised of 7 developed countries and Russia, will gather in the U.S. state of Georgia on June 9. Turkey, Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain and Yemen have also been invited to the G-8 summit.
