FM Gul’s wife "I am Withdrawing From My Case at ECHR"
“When my husband became the foreign minister, I became both the plaintiff and the defendant of the case. So I will give up my claim. However, I still believe that my case was right,” she said.
On September 8 of 1998, Mrs. Gul had applied to the Language, History and Geography Faculty of the Ankara University. She was not accepted because in her photograph, her hair was covered with the Turban. After this rejection, she first opened a case to the appeals court to reverse this process. When she had no result, she petitioned to the Court of the European Human Rights, claiming her ‘education right’.
Getting married in the second grade of high school, Mrs.Gul had discontinued her education. But after 18 years, she graduated from high school, entering the examinations from outside.
She said, “I launched a case because I wanted my ‘education right’ back. However, after this case, my husband first became the Prime Minister and then, the Foreign Minister. As a result, this case became a political event because of my husband’s position. I was thinking to give up my claim, for a while. I did not talk about this decision with my husband in detail. He did not put any pressures on me, I decided myself to withdraw this case and gave instructions to my lawyer to give up the claim. “
