Finding a Solution for Cyprus by May 1 not Easy

Gul said he could not reveal a name at this stage but that several people were being considered for the job of mediator. He described the selection criteria for a mediator: "The mediator will have to hold political weight, beyond technical ability, support his/her state and government, and being esteemed by both parties will make the job easier."

"Lets hope that both Greek Cyprus and Greece will not resist Turkey’s demands and that negotiations can start immediately; and, that both parties will make a sincere effort to work for a solution before May 1."

Gul said the world was optimistic about Turkey’s Cyprus policy.

The Foreign Minister, however, anticipates difficulties in the negotiation process. "To overcome this, Turkey must try its best. Otherwise, Mr. Denktas will say, ‘let’s forget about it, lets not make an effort’," said Gul.
