Fifty Thousand Turkish Students Educated Abroad

Turkey ranks eleventh among countries sending their youth abroad for education, with Turkish students go to Germany, the U.S., England, Canada, Belgium, Australia, France and South Africa. Most do not return after earning their bachelor of arts/science, master of science, or doctorate degree. Turkey ranks ninth among the countries sending students to the United States. According to the Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen Association, Turkish students contribute $824 million annually to the U.S. economy. Tuncer Uney, head of the Turkey Science Association, says that every sector experiences the irreplaceable loss of qualified young people. Uney pointed out that students from Turkey choose to work outside the country because of Turkey’s unemployment problem.
