Eurovision 2025: Turkey Considers EBU Complaint Over Greece’s Entry “Asteromata”
Greece’s Eurovision 2025 entry, Asteromata, has sparked reactions among its eastern neighbors.
Turkish media covering the contest report that the country’s public broadcaster, TRT, is considering filing a complaint with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) if certain allegations about the song’s theme are confirmed.
Following her victory in Greece’s national final on January 30, singer Klaudia clarified that Asteromata is not about any specific event but is dedicated to all people forced to flee their homeland due to war and conflict. However, this explanation has not eased concerns in Turkey.
The Eurovision Türkiye account, which has over 50,000 followers across social media, claims that TRT has acknowledged receiving reports about the song’s alleged theme. According to them, if TRT determines that Asteromata refers to the Pontic Genocide, it will file an official complaint with the EBU.
The Pontic Genocide refers to the mass killings and forced deportations of Pontic Greeks by the Ottoman Empire between 1914 and 1922, as part of a broader campaign against Christian minorities. Greece, Armenia, and several other countries officially recognize these events as genocide, while Turkey rejects this classification, arguing that the deaths were part of World War I’s wider conflicts.
Despite Turkey’s absence from Eurovision since 2013, TRT remains an influential member of the EBU. As the situation unfolds, Greek City Times will continue to provide updates.
