He said acceptance of the Annan plan would be gross treason against Turkey and underlined that the international misconception that the Greek Cypriot government was the administration of the entire territory and population of Cyprus was the stumbling block that has prevented for the past four decades a settlement on the island.

"The resolution of the Cyprus problem will only be possible when the determination of the Turkish Cypriot people is seen and acknowledged. As long as they (Greek Cypriots) see the possibility that they could drag us after themselves, they will continue on the way that they know. The only way of showing them that the way they have taken is a dead-end road is to show them our determination, loyalty to our state and Turkey’s firm support to that right to the end," said Denktas.

Complaining that the goodwill gestures the Turkish Cypriot government has made recently, such as opening the border gates for trips between the two sides, were not yet adequately appreciated by the international community, Denktas said Turkish Cypriots will never accept the claim that the Greek Cypriot government has jurisdiction over northern Cyprus.

He said the fundamental aim of the Annan plan was to devastate a crucial right the 1960 treaties provided to Turkey. He said that right was the right to prevent direct or indirect union of Cyprus (enosis) with Greece. He said signing the Annan plan would be a gross betrayal to Turkey.

He said at his contacts in switzerland he found the opportunity to examine once again the Annan plan together with German and British men of law and they too agreed that acceptance of that document would speedily convert the Turkish Cypriot people from co-founders status to a minority patched up to the Greek Cypriot state. He said after those contacts he was pleased once again that he did not accept the Annan plan "which is full of traps and deficiencies."

"The have to be determined and act in self confidence. It is our basic right not to accept whatever others mights present us and say ‘This is the best for you.’ The Turkish Cypriot people will continue on its right path in determination," said Denktas.
