EU: Greeks cannot Represent Entire Cyprus
E.U. sources that spoke to Zaman said that since the Greek side refused unification on the Island by saying ‘No’ to the April 24 referendum, it is no longer the representative of the entire Island. The sources emphasized that the Greek side’s membership to the Union does not harm Turkey-E.U. relations ‘for now’ because the Cypriot Greeks have no partnership and security agreements with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Therefore, added the sources, secret security information will not be shared with the Greek side.
However, the sources hope that Turkey will recognize the Cypriot-Greek side in the coming months. The sources also pointed out that Cypriot-Greek leader Tassos Papadopoulos cannot request anything from E.U. for now because he lied to his people about the U.N. plan and censored E.U. Enlargement Commissioner Günther Verheugen.
The sources said that Brussels’ dominant conviction is that as long as Mehmet Ali Talat remains the Prime Minister of TRNC, the Greek side cannot represent the entire Island. They said that Talat is pretty influential. "The Greek leader Papadopoulos and Rauf Denktas have same mentality," continued the sources. "Therefore, in this delicate process, Talat’s representation of the north is crucial. And as long as it continues, the Cypriot Greeks cannot represent all of Cyprus."
