Erdogan: Turkey discovers new natural gas reserves in the Black Sea
The President Tayyip Erdoan announced on Saturday that Turkey had discovered a new natural gas reserve of 75 billion cubic metres (bcm).
Erdogan stated during an event held in Istanbul that “with this discovery, we can meet the natural-gas needs of Turkish homes for 3.5 years”.
Erdogan stated that the discovery was made in the Goktepe-3 deep well, at a depth 3,500 metres.
Turkey’s daily gas production in its Sakarya field, located on the Black Sea coast, has reached 9.5 million cubic meters. The country is increasing its energy ambitions at home and abroad.
Turkey, which imports 90% of its energy, is working to reduce its import bill and increase supply security through developing domestic resources and expanding partnerships with international oil and gas exploration. Reporting by Ezgi Erkoyun. (Editing by Gareth Jones, Mark Potter and Gareth Jones)
