EP approves Cyprus report backing Annan

STRASBOURG (AA) – European Parliament (EP) approved today a report which fully supports UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s initiatives regarding solution of the Cyprus issue.

The report which was drawn up by a Luxembourg deputy Jacques Poos asked the European Commission (EU) to monitor the Cyprus negotiations closely.

The report said that it shared the opinion with European Commission that a disagreement in Cyprus would create a serious problem in front of Turkey’s EU membership process.

It underlined that the south sector of the island had to show its good intention for a solution and as well Turkish Cypriots had to accept the UN plan as the basis of a settlement.
