Economic prosperity versus freedom in Cyprus

Even though this will not be an election for the presidency, Denktas, supported in the world literally only by Turkey and hopefully a majority of his people, seems to face difficulties maintaining his negotiator seat at the table.

Will the legendary Denktas, who has been the voice of liberty in his young country, KKTC, for more than 30 years, leave his duty of negotiating for equal rights with the south?

Will the coalition, inspired by the real fact that Northern Cyprus will be a member of the EU if an agreement is launched with the south, be successful?

Will the Turkish people of Northern Cyprus, some of them squeezed between their wallets and the pleasing freedom they have gained in the last 30 years, vote in favor of the opposition coalition or Denktas?

The older generation remembers clearly the times when the island was united and the Turkish people had to have permission even for travelling within the island, not to mention the disastrous mass murders that occurred. As time heals all injuries, it seems that for quite a lot of people living in Northern Cyprus the idea of uniting with the south and being a member of the EU seems very attractive. The older generation still thinks that wisdom will reign in December and Denktas, who has worked for the freedom of his people for all of his life, will stay at the table. But the Greeks laugh up their sleeves and wait for the elections, not even willing to sit at the table before.
