EC Shadows the Latest Positive Developments in Cyprus
In a speech before the general council meeting, Dick Marty, who is also the reported to the assembly, put forward that Turkish policy is intent on ethnic cleansing, and that the time had come to stop Turkey.
The Dutch Parliamentarian Jan Dirk Blaauv said that the report didn’t take into consideration the latest developments on the island, including the fact that the doors had been opened to both sides of the island. He noted that the reasons for the increase in the Turkish population on the island could not be known for sure. Greek Parliamentarian Doros Christodoulides reacted harshly to Blaauv, who holds that the Turks emigrating to Cyprus resemble foreigners coming to Holland in search for work. Addressing to Blaauv, Christodoulides said, ‘if your neighbor country invaded your country, what would you do, what would your reaction be?’
The Republican People’s Party (CHP) Representative Gulsun Bilgehan responded to the approval of the reports, saying they didn’t reflect the facts. The parliamentarians complained about not being able to pay a visit to Cyprus to conduct research and observations. While the alteration proposals by the Turkish delegation were rejected, it was claimed in the report entitled "Colonization of Invaded Cyprus by Turkish Residents" that the number of immigrants sent to TRNC from Turkey exceeded the local population on the island. The Finnish parliamentarian Jaakko Laakso claimed the reason for the conflict is approximately 115,000 immigrants.
