Earthquake Sweeps SE Asia, Kills Thousands
Indonasian Health Ministry has announced that the number of people who have died due to the earthquake and floods in Indonesia is 1,873.
It has been also reported that tidal waves, which hit Southern Thailand, killed 257 and injured 1,000.
An official from Prime Ministry in Sri Lanka had announced that the number of dead has exceeded 2,425 in the country and that the number of dead in the Tamil Nadu province of India has reached to 1,625.
On the other side, it is reported that 42 people died in Malaysia while 10 people died in Myanmar.
It is reported that 10 meter high waves hit the Indonesian coastline. Ahmed Sahid, a government spokesman for the Maldive Islands said that the islands were hit by huge waves and the earthquake caused big damage. Sahid indicated that the island is only one meter high from the sea level and waves caused severe flooding.
As they are in the middle of the tourist season, Sahid said that they were trying to receive news from the region and praying.
Reportedly, waves of 10 meters also hit the Phuket coast of Thailand and searches continue for those lost.
