E.U. Legal Issues Concern Turkey

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul acknowledged that Ankara would accept the European Union’s suggestion on derogations, provided there were no risks. "It is not possible for us to say ‘yes’ to and offer that could possibly be changed in the future," added Gul.

In other dealings between the EU and Ankara, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) continued to work on a new mechanism to deal with Greek lawsuits against Turkey. According to the agreement, of which very few details are known, a draft change for lawsuits will be on the agenda. One lawsuit, filed by a Greek woman known as Loizidou, found in favor of the plaintiff, compelling Ankara to make a payment to her. Many cases have been filed against Turkey in the ECHR, 27 of which bear similarities to the Loizidou case.
