E.C. Cyprus Report: Remove Embargo, Withdraw Troops

It is requested in the Report that Turkey should decrease the number of troops on the Island and in return, it is requested of the European Union (EU) to lift the embargo on Cypriot-Turkish side. By giving a clear message about the start of Turkey’s full membership discussions, the Report wants to encourage Ankara to find a solution in Cyprus. The Turkish parliamentarian participating in the E.C. Parliamentarians Assemby meetings evaluated the report, which called for the immediate restart of negotiations based on the Annan plan, as ‘balanced’. The Turkish government praised the decision due to its ‘open-mindedness and pragmatism’.

On the other hand, it is requested in the Report that the Cypriot-Greek side should make trading relations with the other countries easier for TRNC. It is also requested of the Greeks that after their accession to E.U., they should not show any objections to Turkey’s E.U. membership. The Assembly also requested that Greece contribute to start of the negotiations and encourage the Cypriot-Greek side to accept a solution based on Annan Plan.
