Domercant will play in Turkey (Karsiyaka)
"The road to the NBA has a lot of different paths," Domercant said. "There’s more than one way to skin a cat, I guess you could say. I know I’m going to get there. It’s just going to take longer than I thought." Domercant is to start in Karsiyaka, which is looking to replace last year’s league scoring leader.
"I guess I’m supposed to be the man and fill the void," said the 6-foot-4 guard, who was college basketball’s second-leading NCAA Division I scorer last winter with an EIU record 27.9 average." So, instead of perphaps being a role player in the NBA, Domercant is likely to get his share of shooting attempts on his Turkish team.
"Everywhere I’ve been I’ve found a way to do that," he said with a laugh.
As for languages spoken and life in Turkey, Domercant will have plenty to learn.
"I have no idea," he said. "I think where we’re staying is on the coast, a boat ride away from Greece. Karsiyaka is a city of about 500,000, so I won’t be in a back alley or anything.
The former Naperville North High school star is to leave Aug. 15 for Turkey.
"I leave in August just like I was going to school, except now I don’t have to do any more papers," he said.
Domercant has already been to Europe when his EIU basketball team took that tour before his sophomore season, to Japan as part of an all-star team before his junior year and to Canada last summer.
Now comes a pro basketball chance, one that Domercant has spent countless hours trying to attain with morning workout rituals as well as participation in summer pro-am leagues.
He had to spend more than a month since the disappointing draft day to see where he could play.
"I’ve been trying to have faith, enjoy the summer and leave it in the hands of God," he said. "So much of it is out of your control.
"I’ve been fortunate to have basketball take me all around the world and now I’m getting compensated for my craft."
