‘Discussions With Turkey Urgently Needed’

Known in the Europe for his straightforward approach, Michel said in his speech at a Belgium Turkish Private Sector Friendship Group (BTSFG) dinner that it would indeed be hard to say ‘No’ to Turkey in December if Turkey carries through on its reform process. Michel said he was in favor of Turkey’s integration with the E.U. and indicated that a seat waits for Turkey at the E.U.

Michel then answered questions after his speech. He said Turkey’s likely membership was important for Europe’s geo-strategic security and for an E.U. that wants to become a ‘big player’ in world politics. Michel criticized the sect that opposes Turkey’s membership because of its culture and religion. He added that it would be a mistake if the E.U. decided not to start membership discussions with Turkey by the end of the year.

Michel said he conveyed his concern to French Minister Responsible for European Affairs Michel Barnier about the atmosphere of opposition against Turkey that is manifesting itself in France. The Belgian minister disclosed that Barnier shared his concerns.

Michel also answered questions about Cyprus. He expressed his disappointment about the Greeks’ ‘No’ in the referendum. When asked about the probability that Greek Cypriots might veto a positive decision regarding Turkey’s membership at the December summit, Michel conceded that such a possibility remained. "But we shouldn’t forget this also: some European countries may recognize the North, and we shouldn’t be surprised by this. For that reason, I think the influence of this veto will vanish in a short time," added Michel.
