Die Welt: Turkey costly for the EU

Experts cited in the article said that with the start of the negotiation process with Turkey that 17 million euros, large amounts of which would have to come from Germany, would be given to Turkey. The paper said that it was believed that the EU Commission would advise in favour of starting the negotiation process with Ankara.
Peter Hintze, the European policy spokesperson for the German Union Party, issued a written statement saying that Turkey’s membership would make it difficult for the EU in respect to political, economic and social issues and that Germany would be the first to be affected by it due to its large Turkish population.
The Die Welt article warned that Turkey’s EU adventure could end badly since the necessary discussions on the issues had not been carried out. The paper targeted the German Chancellor and Foreign Minister for accusing those opposed to Turkey’s joining the bloc as being xenophobic and anti-Islamist. The report criticised these acts as blocking any possibility of discussion at a time whether it was most needed.
