Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the number of suspects detained in connection with the deadly hotel fire at a ski resort has increased to 14. Erdogan on Friday also reiterated his commitment to ensuring that anyone who may have caused the blaze by prioritizing profit over safety is brought to justice. The fire tore through the 12-story Grand Kartal hotel in Kartalkaya in the northwestern Bolu province early Tuesday. The blaze left 78 people dead and dozens of others injured. The tragedy sparked widespread calls for accountability into negligence and safety violations. Media reports said that eight of the suspects were scheduled to appear before prosecutors to face possible charges.
Sales of previously occupied U.S. homes fell in 2024 to a nearly 30-year low for the second year in a row as elevated mortgage rates, rising home prices and a low level of properties on the market kept many prospective homebuyers out of the market. The National Association of Realtors said Friday that existing U.S. home sales totaled 4.06 million last year, a 0.7% decline from 2023. That is the weakest year for home sales since 1995, echoing the full-year results from 2023. The median national home price for all of last year rose 4.7% to an all-time high $407,500, the NAR said.

The Right Rev. Mariann Budde, Episcopal bishop of the Diocese of Washington, made headlines this week after she angered President Donald Trump with her sermon during an inaugural prayer service. It was not the first time the cleric has publicly disagreed with Trump, but it became a striking moment in what is usually a staid and scripted event. Budde made a direct appeal to Trump in her sermon, asking him to have mercy on members of the LGBTQ+ community and migrants who are in the country illegally. Trump later claimed Budde is a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater” on his Truth Social site.
Wrexham competes in English soccer’s league system but the Welsh soccer club owned by Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney was hoping to be allowed to participate in the Welsh League Cup. That’s because the competition has been granted a qualification spot for the UEFA Conference League. The Football Association of Wales made a proposal to the English FA on behalf of Wrexham, Cardiff, Swansea and Newport, the four Welsh teams playing in English soccer. That was rejected on Friday. The FA says if the four clubs “choose to participate in the English system they must do so on the same basis as the English clubs which participate in that system.” Reynolds and McElhenney bought the club for $2.5 million in 2021.

Novak Djokovic is 37 and was forced to stop playing because of an injury at two of the past four Grand Slam tournaments. That includes quitting after just one set in the Australian Open semifinals on Friday because of a problem with his left leg. Djokovic said he does not know yet how long he will be sidelined. But he also vowed to strive to win more major championships. He already owns 24, and if he gets one more he would have more Grand Slam singles trophies than any other player in the history of tennis. Djokovic rebounded quickly from knee surgery last season, so he could come back strong now, too.
Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique is counting on new star signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to improve his team’s attack with trademark goals from outside the penalty area. Kvaratskhelia scored with several spectacular strikes for Napoli, where he averaged a healthy goal every three games in Serie A. His strike rate for Georgia is even better with 17 goals in 40 appearances. Enrique says Kvaratskhelia’s long-distance shooting ”will bring something positive to the team.” Enrique did not say if the flying winger from Georgia will make his debut at home to Reims in the French league on Saturday but said he is in excellent physical shape.

A London judge has rejected a U.S. mother’s challenge to be extradited to Colorado to face murder charges in the deaths of two of her young children. Kimberlee Singler, 36, is accused of two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting and stabbings of her 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son. She also faces one count of attempted murder in the slashing of her 11-year-old daughter with a knife. Her lawyer says she denies the allegations. A judge in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered her extradited after rejecting arguments that her human rights would be violated because she faces a sentence of life without parole if convicted.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suggested that Israel might not withdraw all of its forces from Lebanon by a deadline set in its ceasefire with Hezbollah. Israel is supposed to complete its withdrawal by Sunday under the deal reached in November. Hezbollah militants are due to pull back to the north of the Litani River. And the Lebanese armed forces would patrol the buffer zone in alongside United Nations peacekeepers. Netanyahu said Friday that the ceasefire “is based on the understanding that the withdrawal process could possibly continue beyond the 60 days” and that Lebanon hasn’t yet “fully enforced” the agreement.

United Nations officials say terrorism and the use of new technologies like weaponized drones against merchant shipping have superseded piracy as the top concerns for maritime security, and it’s up to private companies to employ specific countermeasures to neutralize such threats. Members of the U.N. working group on the use of mercenaries, say maritime security companies hired to protect merchant ships sailing through high-risk areas are ultimately responsible for figuring out which procedures and defensive armaments are required to repel any terrorism or piracy-related threat. The officials were in Cyprus for a nine-day visit focusing on the use of private maritime security companies on Cyprus-flagged ships operating in high-risk sea lanes.
Colombia’s president has issued a decree giving him emergency powers to restore order in a coca-growing region bordering Venezuela wracked in recent days by a deadly turf war among dissident rebel groups. President Gustavo Petro’s decree is the first of its kind in more than a decade and underscores the seriousness of the current conflict in a country that for decades was paralyzed by political violence. However, it applies only to the rural Catatumbo region near the border with Venezuela. In the past week, at least 80 people have been killed and an estimated 36,000 more displaced as fighting intensifies between the National Liberation Army and holdouts from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

The excellent play of the trio as well as their teammates has Barcelona in second place in the Champions League standings and in contention both in the Spanish league and Copa del Rey.

A community in southern Madagascar has pulled together to save thousands of critically endangered tortoises that were swept away from their sanctuary and left swimming for their lives in floods this month caused by a tropical cyclone. The 12,000 radiated and spider tortoises that were housed at the Lavavolo Tortoise Center had been confiscated from poachers and illegal wildlife traffickers. They faced a new and unexpected ordeal when Cyclone Dikeledi hit the southern part of the island in mid-January. A sanctuary representative says a rescue operation involving staff, volunteers and even local police officers has saved more than 10,000 tortoises.
