Denktas: We Will Determine Our Position

Speaking at a meeting with delegation of Zonguldak Young Businessmen’s Association, President Denktas said that there were serious legal deficiencies in the plan, which was presented to the sides by United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.

”Can you resort such a deficient document to referendum? We will determine our position in line with decisions to be taken by the United Nations Security Council. Turkish Cypriot side wants a lasting agreement to be based on equality,” he stressed.

Denktas said what those tried to do was unjust and illegal, stating that the United States and Britain, who wanted to solve Cyprus question, influenced the U.N. Secretary General and tried to make an agreement in line with their own interests. Denktas said, ”we say it should also be appropriate for our interests. You should consider this.”

Denktas said the United States had a statement saying that ”solution of the problem within the scope of Annan plan would be for the interests of the United States,” adding that, ”well, we know this, but it should also be for our interest. Such a trick is not interest. It should be a lasting interest which will satisfy us. This is the situation, our fight continues.”

Denktas said it was stated that Cyprus enters the EU, however that Cyprus did not apply for EU full membership, and that Greek Cypriot administration applied under a false name. He said this was contrary to the 1960 agreements.

Denktas said, ”intention of this application is to disrupt balance between Turkey and Greece in favor of Greece, to exclude Turkey, and to drag Turkish Cypriots as minority and to sentence the Turkish Cypriots.”

Denktas said an incredible fight was started in the past 3-4 years to separate Turkey and Turkish Cypriots.

Denktas said people began to see the tricks gradually.
