Denktas Speaks to Turkish Parliament

Denktas a warned deputies that indirect Enosis (union with mainland Greece) was about to become reality in Cyprus. He argued that if the result of the referenda is ‘yes’, then the TRNC would be annihilated. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was not at the Parliament, watched Denktas on television for 15 minutes. Most of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) deputies listened to the speech and opposition leaders also not represented in the parliament were present in the Parliamentary.

Denktas made the Parliament to experience an unusual day. The salon was filled by former parliament members and observers as well as AKP and CHP deputies. There were more than 200 AKP deputies and nine ministers including Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul. Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader, Deniz Baykal, and True Path Party (DYP) leader, Mehmet Agar, who had front row seats.

The opposition leaders not represented in the parliament showed great interest as well. Democratic Leftist Party (DSP) leader, Bulent Ecevit, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader, Devlet Bahceli, Great Union Party (BBP) leader, Muhsin Yazicioglu, Socialist People’s Party (SHP) leader, Murat Karayalcin and Felicity Party (SP) leader, Recai Kutan took their seats at the Parliament for the first time in one and a half years, and the majority of former parliament members belonging to these parties attracted attention.
