Denktas Releases His Letter To Annan About Landmines

In the letter, Denktas noted that TRNC military authorities were ready to discuss clearing landmines in the mentioned area with U.N. officials.

Denktas stressed that clearing landmines in that area would serve more secure passages between two sides.

Expressing hope that the Greek Cypriot side, which did not give positive response to their former proposals, would give a positive response to that initiative of TRNC, Denktas said that TRNC’s proposal to clear landmines in order to strengthen the positive atmosphere created by freeing passages between two sides as of April 23 would contribute to efforts for a comprehensive agreement in Cyprus as a confidence-building measure.

Denktas stated that clearing landmines in Lefkosa and buffer zone would help more secure reciprocal passages, create a military confidence-building measure to which U.N. attributed importance, and make an additional contribution to efforts for a comprehensive agreement.
