Denktas: I Did Not Wear the Convict’s Shirt!

At a press conference Monday, Denktas said that a document prepared by others was imposed on both sides in Cyprus, in an unprecedented method and in haste and “This method is unfair, and the procedure is wrong. Pressures are unacceptable.”

Denktas said if he decided to withdraw from talks, the government will be dissolved, according to a protocol the coalition had made at the beginning.

Denktas said he had handed a document to UN authorizing the TRNC mission in the foursome talks fully and that, there was nothing much he could do and he could not wear the convict’s shirt which was imposed on him.

Denktas said that the Greek Cypriot side had turned down 210 of the 227 agreements furnished by the Turkish side which in turn had raised objection to 7 out of 1156 agreements furnished by Greek Cypriots, but at the end had opposed all of them, to establish a balance. Denktas said that a document was put forward without identifying the Cyprus problem and pressures were put on, to have the sides accept it.

“There are a lot of issues which are not settled. We shall all see to which extent these will be settled with the contributions of Turkey and Greece” he said.

“We wish success to our friends in Switzerland. We have to be sure, we are sure that they will act, considering the rights and future of Turkish Cypriots and preventing the reoccurrence of the 1963-1974 eras.”

As a journalist told him that the irreversible conditions between himself and PM Erdogan seemed similar and why he did not go to Switzerland, Denktas said “I did not say that we have differences and “A review on these could be done with Turkey before Switzerland.”

Denktas said he will make a broader statement on Tuesday, on the reasons of his decision not to go to Switzerland.

“The promise I made to Turkey was to go to New York, not to cut off everything there and not to desert the table, in any case. Therefore we remained at the table and accepted this procedure. I carried on the talks to Lefkosa. I did not make any other promise to move further than this. I tried in Lefkosa, made my own evaluations and tell my friends, the government to do whatever necessary after this point” he said adding that there was nothing left for him to do but he held the authority to evaluate the outcome. “

“Friendly” Postponement of Summit

To experience an exhilaration and joy after his expected election victory on March 28, PM Erdogan instructed his aides to plead to Greek PM Karamanlis to postpone their Cyprus meeting for a day. After the secret diplomacy, Karamanlis, who is called by Erdogan as “My friend”, accepted the postponement.
