Decaying Corpses All over the Region
In the Indonesian island of Sumatra, population 4.5 million, the stench of corpses is unbearable in Banda Aceh, the capital of the Aceh province. Due to both lack of supplies and staff, the dead bodies cannot be collected. Authorities say that the number of dead is nearly 30,000 and this figure could rise to 40,000, they fear.
Locals of Banda Aceh say that "at least one quarter of the city’s population are dead." In the city with a population of 350,000 there is no electricity, water, or food and long lines for gas. Polluted water and a lack of food supplies are feared to pave the way for
an epidemic in the region that could be a second disaster for this city in particular.
According to the preliminary reports, the number of houses ruined in Indonesia is 100,000 leaving 500,000 homeless. This figure, however, increases day by day. Besides, the corpses of 400 soldiers have been found so far and 300 soldiers are still missing.
