Cyprus: "Its my duty to protect the freedom"

Responding to a question the president said his undersecretary Ergun Olgun would be meeting Mr. Weston who is beginning a series of contacts with the two sides in Cyprus in the following days.

He said Mr. Olgun would convey his views to the American envoy.

Turning to the past; he said a possible solution to the Cyprus problem was prevented with a resolution adopted by the Greek Cypriot National Council in l989.

‘Mr. Weston recognises only one state, one people, one democracy on the island. It’s people like these – who only recognize the Greek Cypriot Administration as the sole government of the island – and who have been preventing a solution to the problem for the last 40 years.’ he added.

Referring to a statement by the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who said that the Cyprus problem could only be solved on the basis of the realities – which are the effective guarantorship of Turkey, bi-zonailty, two democracies and two peoples on the island -, the President said this is what he has been fighting-for, for so long.

‘ Its my duty to protect the freedom, sovereignty, political equality and statehood of the Turkish Cypriot people and I will continue to protect these for as long as it takes.’
