Cyprus issue was not an obstacle before before Turkey’s EU path

Denktas noted, ”nobody should deceive you. Cyprus issue is not an obstacle before Turkey’s EU path.”

The struggle of Greek Cypriots was to provide a life in Cyprus under an artificial agreement, Denktas said.

Denktas went on saying, ”there are rights of 70 million Turks on Cyprus and these sacred rights can’t be abolished. The Greek Cypriots applied to the EU violating these rights. What is wanted now is Denktas’ signing this or that agreement on behalf of his people, violating Turkey’s rights and legalizing this situation. Since we say that we don’t and won’t do this, they make us a target. We don’t care.”

”Their aim is to firstly take Cyprus and bring Aegean issue onto the agenda in 2004. After throwing us from Cyprus, a stronger Greece will stand against us. Why is imposition made against Turkey and it is not made on those who caused bloodshed and created mass graves? If we think about only this issue, everybody will see that Turkey is right and Cyprus issue is not an obstacle,” Denktas said.

Denktas emphasized that their aim was to provide peaceful co-existence of two nations in Cyprus.

They wanted peace in Cyprus and believed that there would be peace, Denktas stated.

Denktas added, ”however, there can be peace if the two states make peace. But, the Greek Cypriot administration should give up its intrigues to possess Cyprus by claiming that ‘it rules whole Cyprus.’ And, the United States, Britain and other European countries who support the Greek Cypriot administration should understand that Turkish Cypriots will not yield. Our duty is to protect our rights. You also protected our rights and hundreds of Turks died in Cyprus. Your support has kept us alive and will continue to do so.”

Denktas and his wife will proceed to Istanbul after wrapping up contacts in Karamursel.
