Papadopulous said the Permanent Representative of Southern Cyprus in the UN put the forward the suggestion to Annan, during his meeting with Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski who was visiting the Greek side of the island. The Greek spokesperson Kypros Hrisostomidis said during a news conference that Greek Cyprus stated a month ago that it was ready for new negotiations as the basis of the Annan plan. Hrisostomidis said: "We are ready to begin immediately to solve the Cyprus problem." On the other side of the island, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat stated when reminded of the comments by the Polish President that the reason for the separation of the island is the fact that Papadopulous had called on his citizens to say "No" to the Annan Plan.
