Chirac: Turkey and EU Should Meet in the Same World

Chirac, addressing French ambassadors, said that Turkey’s full membership discussion could start soon if the EU gives the green light at the December summit. However, Chirac emphasized that Turkey’s membership to the Union should not be rushed.

"In any case, a certain amount of time should be spent in order to let this country benefit from the EU’s privileges. That process will be long and hard," said the French President.

Chirac implied that sooner or later this membership has to come to life. "Both the EU and Turkey taking the same path in the future world is for the benefit of both parties."

Several observers interpreted Chirac’s remarks as the French President following a "careful manner of conduct". Even though Chirac supports Turkey’s membership to the Union, he still has to take concerned voters into consideration.
