Cable Car Passengers Stranded Overnight After Deadly Crash in Turkey

The last of 174 stranded cable car passengers who were left hanging overnight above a mountain outside of Antalya, Turkey have been rescued, according to The Guardian. On Friday evening, one of the Tunektepe cable cars struck a pole, causing it to break open and spill its passengers onto the rocks below, killing a 54 year-old Turkish man. Several others were injured in the accident, including two children. Over 600 rescue personnel and ten helicopters continued to rescue passengers stranded in at least 16 other cable cars throughout the night and into the next day. One passenger, Ayse Hatice Polat, said being trapped in the constantly swaying carriage was “torture,” and she wasn’t sure how she or her family would ever recover from the ordeal. “The night was awful, we were very scared. There were children with us, they passed out,” she said. An investigation has been launched into the cause of the accident by Antalya’s chief prosecutor’s office.
