British Soldiers in Custody; U.S. Ignorant about Torture

The paper reported that the ill treatment and torture started when Lanchashire battalion Captain Dai Jones was killed in August. According to the Telegraph, from then on the British troops vowed revenge. Military police are questioning the six soldiers at a British air-force base in Cyprus. The Telegraph wrote that eight other cases are also pending investigation.

On the other hand, U.S. Brigadier General Janis Karpinski, who is in charge of Abu Garib prison, spoke to the New York Times for the first time about the alleged torture of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. soldiers. She said that the prison was not under the command of her troops during the time the alleged incidents took place. She said that the prison was under the jurisdiction of military intelligence officers when the torture was reported to have happened. She added that those offices are probably more inclined to use torture.

Meanwhile, U.S. Chief of General Staff General Richard Myers defended on ABC television last night the there was no hard evidence indicating that this torture is wide spread. Myers went on to say that it would be a shame if the alleged actions of a few American troops blackened the honor of hundreds of thousands of US troops.

On the other side, Amnesty International announced that the torture photos are not a surprise. The organization has received many reports of torture and is requesting an independent inquiry into the matter.
