Baykal: We Will Not Take Binding Decision About The Motion
Speaking at CHP’s Group meeting, Baykal said the government made no statement although for a week they have been telling that the agreement signed on February 8 following the acceptance of the prime ministry motion on February 6 on renovation of ports and air bases had not legal basis.
Baykal said neither the National Defense Minister nor the Foreign Minister made any statement in this respect. Speaking about the possible motion that would be brought, Baykal said, ”why wasn’t it brought beforehand? Why haven’t you disclosed it earlier openly.”
Baykal said some questions should be answered as the second motion was brought onto the agenda, stating that, ”what kind of assurances have been taken? What would be the economic dimensions of the cooperation? Will the military, political and cooperation agreement, which had been signed earlier, have validity? Will you only allow use of air space? Will the air space be used for humanitarian aid, or war, or passage of units of other countries? Has any assurance been given about the formation in Iraq following the operation?”
Pointing out that international legitimacy was very important for CHP, Baykal said this was an issue concerning the whole world. Baykal said every sensible person in the world opposed to the attitude of the United States, stressing that otherwise, the U.N. would be buried into the depth of history.
Baykal said Turkey had to be in peace as of the geography, geopolitical situation, its neighbors and experiences, and noted that, ”we should oppose and keep outside the initiatives which are illegal and will shake the region.”
