Barnier: Religion Not an EU Membership Criterion

Barnier was in New York for the United Nations (UN) 59th General Assembly where he talked to reporters about Turkey’s membership process: "The religion of this or that country has never been a criterion for membership. Never. The European Union is a political and secular body."

The French Minister added: "In the following years, it is possible that other smaller Muslim countries will look to the EU as well. These are Balkan countries."
