Banks say they are ready for New Turkish Lira
Financial institutions such as Ziraat Bankasi, Is Bankasi and Yapi Kredi have all said that they are prepared for the switch over to the New Turkish Lira (YTL), which will officially enter circulation on the stroke of midnight Friday night, replacing the old currency.
However, most banks have said that customers may experience some delays in electronic transactions, with most automatic teller machines being unavailable for between half an hour and an hour before and after midnight.
The YTL will differ from the old by having six zeros less. There will also be a return to the long extinct coinage of the kurus. However, the old currency will still remain in circulation for at least six months.
Turkey’s Central Bank has said it has set up a team of 15 experts to monitor the launch of the YTL, with a monitoring centre to be linked to all banks across the country through an online system. The team will assist any bank that may experience difficulty, the Central Bank said.
