AWACS for NATO summit arrive in Turkey

According to a decision made by NATO Europe Commander Gen. James Jones and approved by the allies, the planes will provide security during the summit.

NATO sources also said that a team with expertise in chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons was sent to Istanbul to help with security.

NATO has 17 AWACS deployed in Geilenkirchen, Germany. Some of the planes are currently being used to provide security for the EURO 2004 football championship, while others will be sent in Greece during the Olympic Games.

As part of security measures to be employed during the summit, the Istanbul Municipal government announced on Thursday that a total parking ban would be imposed on all roads designated as alternative routes from June 27 to June 30 and that the cars in violation of the ban would be towed.

In a statement released by the municipality, a municipal complaints bureau would be in operation during the summit. New traffic signs will also be erected to identify alternative routes for motorists.
