Armenian Americans Send a Letter to Turkey

A letter bearing the Chairman of the Assembly’s Board of Directors Peter Vosbikian’s signature, was sent by the Turkish Embassy in Washington to Turkish ambassador Ecvet Tezcan, who was in contact with Armenian groups in the USA last month.
The letter stated that even though the Turkish government mistreated Armenians and did not recognize the so-called Armenian genocide, the AAA accepted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ request to meet. In the letter referring to Tezcan, the AAA said, "In the meetings last month, we had a sincere exchange of views on many topics. You had us believe that your government seriously considered a new relationship with Armenia and the Armenians."

With regard to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s and the ambassador of Azerbaijan to Turkey Ahmet Unal Cevikoz’s statements in the press, the AAA said, "These statements and actions are contradictory and implicit of our previous talks. This paves the way for serious suspicion about your country’s political aims. Therefore we would be glad if the Ministry of Foreign Affairs could explain this hostile manner so that we can share opinions in the future." Ambassador Tezcan had met with representatives of the Armenian groups in New York, Los Angeles and Washington last month. Some Armenian groups like the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) asked for affirmation of the so-called Armenian genocide as a precondition to meeting Tezcan, and as a result, the meeting did not take place.

‘Genocide Bill’ still being pushed

The Armenian Lobby is trying to gain recognition for the genocide by including it in the budget law draft of the US State Department in the Senate.

In theory, the bill is only likely to be brought to the agenda when the State Department’s budget meetings are concluded in the senate.
