Approval from “Without Turkish” Cyprus Parliament to EU
The Turkish Cypriots participated in the voting with empty seats. There are 80 seats in the Greek Cypriot parliament. 24 of them have been kept empty for years for the Turkish Cypriots. Through this way, the Greek Cypriot message that, “Turks can come and have a say in the decisions of Parliament whenever they want” is conveyed to the world. According to 1960 Constitution, Turkish Cypriots had a 30% representation right in Parliament as well as in other public institutions.
There were 35 seats for Greek Cypriots and 15 for Turkish Cypriots in Parliament in 1963. Greek Cypriots made a constitutional amendment and increased the number of seats to 80.
