America’s ‘Cypriot Turk’ Stance Angers Cypriot Greeks
Powell told a group of children at the State Department, "With our European friends, we are making efforts to provide some benefits to the Cyprus Turkish side."
Upon that, the Greek newspaper Simerini reported that Powell was wrong to say "Cyprus Turkish Side". The paper contends that Powell should have used the term ‘occupied regions’.
On the other side, US State Department Spokesman Adam Ereli disclosed that they are searching for ways to end isolation of the Cypriot Turks, including the resumption of direct flights to the north of the island; however, no decision has been reached yet.
Another positive approach in favor of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) came from the US State Department’s new Cyprus Representative, Laura Kennedy. She visited TRNC Washington Representative Osman Ertug in his office yesterday.
Yakovou, in addition to his criticism of Powell, also objected to efforts to resume direct flight to TRNC. "I know what the Chicago Convention, International Civil Aviation Organization rules, and Eurocontrol rules say, so super power America should know too."
