American Jewish Committee supports US aid to Turkey
AJC wrote a letter to Congress members asking for support for the Turkish aid package while the conciliation efforts of the two different texts which was approved by the Senate and House of Representatives separately for the additional budget for the war expenditures still continues.
The $1 billion, which Turkey could use to leverage up to $8.5 billion in loans and loan guarantees, was considered crucial to shoring up its shaky economy that has been further hit by the war in Iraq.
AJC has 125,000 members in the U.S. "An economically strong and stable Turkey would continue its role as a model for the Islamic world, and this role becomes more important after the collapse of the Saddam regime. Economic problems in the Turkish economy damages the vital interests of the U.S. in the region," read the letter.
"Turkey is continuing to play a critical role. It is high time to fix the relations for both sides," added the letter.
