Al-Rubai: We Will Hang Saddam on July 1
Al-Rubai, a member of the Iraqi Interim Governance Council, said; U.S. suspended the execution of capital punishment until the day when the sovereign Iraqi state is established. We can string Saddam up on July 1. Two other members of the Council said that the trial of Saddam Hussein would most probably begin in 4-6 months.
Washington Cannot Decide
Washington has not decided where to hold the trial of Hussein yet. There are four separate options. He may be put before
•Iraqi courts in Iraq,
•An international tribunal,
•A civilian court in U.S.,
•A military court in U.S.
In any case, Hussein will be accused of
•Using chemical weapons in Haleppo and other campaigns he carried out against Kurds;
•Suppressing Kurdish and Shiite revolts following the first Gulf War;
•Suppressing marsh Arabs;
•War crimes against Iran and Kuwait;
•Recent attacks against coalition forces and other targets in Iraq.
U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told CBS TV that Saddam Hussein would be treated as a prisoner of war. Rumsfeld said that torturing him during interrogation was out of question. On the other hand, Jeremy Greenstock, the British Envoy in Iraq, said that Hussein should be tried in his country, however, Britain, by no means, would take place in a legal process in which capital punishment was present. British Foreign minister Jack Straw also stated that they were against capital punishment, however, he said; We will respect the decision any way.
